CNN's Scott Jennings
CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings said on Friday that Vice President Kamala Harris is dodging questions from the press to conceal her liberal record.
Harris has yet to hold a press event or be interviewed since the launch of her 2024 presidential campaign on July 21, the day President Joe Biden stepped down from the race. Jennings said on “CNN News Central” that Harris intends to campaign on being an alternative to Republican nominee Donald Trump rather than on her policy agenda.
“[The Harris campaign does not] want to answer questions. I mean, that’s a lot of talking, and here’s the bottom line,” Jennings said. “They don’t want her to sit and answer questions. And if you look at her TV hits now and you don’t know anything, if you just landed here on a spaceship and you knew nothing, you would assume she’s running as a Republican. I mean, she’s out here running, saying she’s throwing criminals in jail and getting tough on the border. You’ve got [Tim] Walz out here saying he’s gonna protect the Second Amendment. You’d think these people were running as Republicans when, in fact, their record is way left of center, way outside of the political mainstream.”
“The bottom line is, they don’t want to run on any kind of policy agenda. This campaign is an avatar, it is a vessel to just stop Trump. Their main thing is being president is nothing more than not being named Donald Trump,” Jennings continued. “That’s what their platform is, I don’t think it’s enough. But we’ll see if she can get away with it, it is a short campaign.”

Jennings refuted the Harris campaign’s accusation that Trump is “too lazy” to be on the campaign trail, arguing Harris cannot even talk to the press. (RELATED: Sparks Fly As CNN Panel Debates Kamala Harris’ Lack Of Media Appearances)
“[Trump] is campaigning. And if you want to make an attack that Trump is too lazy to campaign because he’s not having rallies in swing states, I guess we can make an attack that Kamala Harris is too something to hold a press conference or answer questions about her record, her time as vice president, her positions when she was running for president, which she now through an anonymous flack, says she’s changing. So, I guess the campaigns will have a tit for tat on that, about who’s actually doing what they need to do to assure the American people that they will be a good president for the next four years,” Jennings said.
Trump held an unexpected press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday to address questions about his campaign and policy positions. The former president announced he agreed to three debates set to be hosted in September by ABC News, NBC News and Fox News.
The Trump campaign’s current strategy is eliminating Harris’s honeymoon phase by getting her off-script in front of the press and voters. Trump assured the “Fox & Friends” co-hosts on Wednesday that Harris “will be exposed” during the foreseen debates and suggested she is attempting to back out of debates.
Harris challenged Trump to a debate during a July 30 campaign event in Atlanta, Georgia, where she called on the former president to criticize her “to [her] face.”
