‘But Why Is He Losing Support Right Now?': MSNBC Host Presses Biden Campaign Official On Poor Polling
MSNBC host Ana Cabrera questioned President Joe Biden’s 2024 campaign communications director Michael Tyler on Monday about polls showing him receiving diminishing support from a key Democratic voting bloc.
CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said on Monday that former President Donald Trump is “careening towards a historic performance” with black voters as Biden hemorrhages a substantial segment of this demographic. Cabrera asked Tyler about polling showing voters disapprove of how Biden is handling the economy, as well as black voters ditching the president.

“Poll after poll has shown the economy and inflation is near or at the top of voter priorities,” Cabrera said. “A new one by The Economist shows just 40% of voters approve of President Biden’s handling of the economy and just 26% of independents approve. How do you plan to address that?”
“I think you do it by running this campaign, right? Every single day, talking about the work that the president has done since he took office and the historic record of accomplishment: 15 million jobs, 800,000 manufacturing jobs and talking about the work that the president continues to do for Americans,” Tyler said.
CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin also questioned Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday regarding polls indicating that Americans perceive Trump as being “better” economically than Biden. Prices resulting from inflation in May hit a milestone of jumping over 20% non-seasonally adjusted since Biden took office, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED).
“The $35 cap on insulin for seniors, the work that he wants to do in a second term to expand that cap for everybody, a fairer tax code, making sure that as we move forward that no billionaire pays less in taxes than a school teacher or a nurse and making sure people understand everything that Donald Trump is talking about would only worsen the gap between the ultra wealthy and the rest of us,” Tyler continued. “That’s the choice that the American people are going to see on the stage in Atlanta and we’re going to continue to hammer home for the rest of this campaign.”
“Over the weekend, the Trump Campaign launched a Black Americans for Trump Coalition. Your campaign mocked it and said it’s not fooling anyone. But look at this. USA Today/Suffolk polls show from Michigan and Pennsylvania specifically, these are two key swing states. They show President Biden has lost roughly 20 points among black voters in both of those states, down from 76% to the mid 50s. Of course, in a close election that can make a huge difference. Why do you think the president is losing support with these voters?” Cabrera asked.
Political commentator Bakari Sellers on Monday rejected the polls indicating Trump will win a large segment of the black vote, saying, “Donald Trump is not going to get 20% of the black vote. He’s simply not.”
“This campaign is going to do very good amongst black voters because no administration has done more for black America than the Biden-Harris administration,” Tyler said before Cabrera cut him off, asking, “But why is he losing support right now?”
Tyler said the presidential campaign will eventually recover these voters as they recognize the Biden administration’s record while scrutinizing Trump’s.
