Democrats and top White House officials are privately discussing their fears of President Joe Biden’s chances in a 2024 rematch with former President Donald Trump, yet another indication of the Biden team’s angst for reelection, according to Politico.
Prominent Biden officials have privately disclosed their concerns about the president’s newly launched reelection campaign, which currently lacks a headquarters, adequate staff and a finance director, according to Politico. Donors are growing weary about the president’s fundraising ability, and recent polling indicates Biden’s popularity is plunging, including in a head-to-head matchup with Trump.
“Democrats are bedwetters historically,” Jim Messina, former campaign manager for President Barack Obama’s reelection, told Politico. “There’s like, just full-throated fucking panic.”
A Washington Post/ABC poll showed that most Democrats and left-leaning independents prefer someone else to be the party’s nominee rather than Biden, and only 32% believe he has enough mental capacity to be president. The president’s approval rating reached a new low at 36%, and he lost to Trump in a hypothetical matchup 38% to 45%.
“The ABC poll, while it is an outlier, it’s also a warning, right?” Terrance Woodbury, CEO of progressive firm HIT Strategies, told Politico. “They are a very confident White House. They are most confident in their record. He is a creature of the legislature and he believes that passing legislation is good governing and he’s passed some damn good legislation. But that ain’t always good politics.”
While some Biden aides don’t want to take anything for granted in 2024, others downplayed their critics, and insisted that the president’s record is enough, according to Politico.
“The Biden-Harris reelection campaign is building on the work of a historically strong DNC and state party operation, unified after the best midterm performance of a sitting president since FDR, and on the offense against a deeply unpopular MAGA agenda,” Kevin Munoz, Biden’s campaign spokesperson, told Politico. “The pundits and Beltway media have always underestimated Joe Biden, and he’s proven the doubters wrong every time.”
The Real Clear Politics (RCP) average for a general election matchup between Trump and Biden, based on polls conducted between April 11 and May 5, indicates that Trump has a slight lead over the president with 0.7%.
