Latino voters’ top concerns are inflation and crime, an Ipsos and Axios poll found, spelling trouble for Democrats who perform poorly on both issues compared to Republicans.
Inflation was a top three concern for 37% of respondents, and 36% named crime or gun violence as a top concern, making those issues the top priorities by a wide margin, the poll found. Republicans had a nine-point advantage over Democrats on public trust for handling inflation and a seven-point lead for crime in a recent Politico/Morning Consult poll.
“While they give Republicans a slight advantage on being better on the economy, and Democrats on sharing their values, the fact is that roughly a quarter, or more, believe neither side is handling the issues they care about well,” Cliff Young, president of Ipsos U.S. Public Affairs, told Axios. “This makes them, in many ways, the swing voters of the 2022 election.”

Latino voters still favored Democratic candidates at 33% compared to 18% who supported Republicans, and 23% said they weren’t sure who they would vote for, the Ipsos/Axios poll found. The survey comes amid a years-long trend of declining support for Democrats among Latinos, a demographic that used to reliably favor the party.
Abortion has dominated Democrats’ midterm messaging, with Democratic super PACs and campaigns spending triple what they did in 2018 on the issue, but only 12% of Latino voters listed abortion as a top concern, the poll found. Abortion was less important to Latinos than immigration, climate change, health care, political extremism, taxes and racial injustice, which has 13 to 26% support.
The poll surveyed 1,005 Hispanic and Latino likely voters Sept. 30 to Oct. 8 with a 3.8% margin of error.
