Democratic Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline said Tuesday that former President Donald Trump’s tweet after the Capitol riot “chills me to the core.”
“Now virtually every American who saw those events unfold on television was absolutely horrified by the events of January 6th. But we also know how President Trump himself felt about the attack. He told us,” Cicilline said.
Cicilline read one of Trump’s now-deleted tweets from Jan 6., where the former president said the Capitol riot was in response to alleged election fraud and told people to “go home with love & peace.”
“Every time I read that tweet, it chills me to the core. The president of the United States sided with the insurrectionists. He celebrated their cause,” Cicilline said. “He validated their attack. He told them, ‘remember this day forever,’ hours after they marched through these halls looking to assassinate Vice President Pence, the speaker of the house, and any of us they could find.”
A mob breached the Capitol building on Jan. 6 during a protest that turned into a deadly riot against the Electoral College’s certification of the presidential election results.
Trump’s impeachment trial is scheduled to run through the weekend and may conclude early next week, according to The Hill. To convict Trump, 67 senators, including at least 17 Republican, would have to vote for the articles of impeachment.
Pelosi picked Cicilline as one of nine impeachment managers on Jan. 12, according to The New York Times.
The House voted 232-197 on Jan. 13 to impeach Trump for a second time, charging him with a single article of “incitement of insurrection.”
