Democratic South Carolina Rep. Joe Cunningham cracked open a beer on the House floor Thursday to toast bipartisanship.

“Our country would be much better served if Democrats and Republicans can come together. My grandfather always told me that you can get through by any problem if you actually sit down with somebody and have a beer together,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham said since the beginning of his term, he has been attempting to collaborate with people and said he will never stop doing so.

“I won’t ever stop reaching across the aisle or trying to work with one another or sitting down and having a beer and listen to each other,” Cunningham said.

“For the betterment of this country, we have to come together. We have to sit down and listen to each other and maybe even have a beer. For the spirit of bipartisanship and cooperation, I raise this glass to my colleagues, both Democrats and Republicans. I yield back,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham previously attempted to bring a six-pack of beer to the House floor in January 2019, but was stopped.

Cunningham conceded his defeat in November for the race of South Carolina’s First Congressional District against Republican Nancy Mace, the Associated Press reported.

Cunningham’s office didn’t immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
