Hollywood actress Milla Jovovich spoke out Tuesday on her “horrific” abortion two years ago, saying the procedure was “one of the most horrific experiences” of her life.
The actress posted an Instagram detailing her thoughts on what she called Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp’s “draconian” abortion legislation restricting abortions even in cases of rape or incest.
“I don’t like to get political and I try to only do it if a really have to and this is one of those times,” Jovovich said in an Instagram post. “If someone doesn’t want to continue reading, you have been warned.”
Jovovich said she was four-and-a-half months pregnant and shooting a movie in Eastern Europe when she had an abortion.
“I myself went through an emergency abortion 2 years ago,” the actress wrote, “I was 4 1/2 months pregnant and shooting on location in Eastern Europe. I went into pre term labor and told that I had to be awake for the whole procedure. It was one of the most horrific experiences I have ever gone through. I still have nightmares about it. I was alone and helpless.”
Though Jovovich claims abortion is “a nightmare at its best” and discusses the depression she suffered after her abortion, she also says she believes it is important to speak out in defense of women’s right to safe abortions.
“Thank God I was able to find my way out of that personal hell without turning to medication,” she said in her Instagram, “but the memory of what I went through and what I lost will be with me till the day I die. Abortion is a nightmare at its best. No woman wants to go through that. But we have to fight to make sure our rights are preserved to obtain a safe one if we need to.”
Jovovich married producer Paul W.S. Anderson in 2009 and has two daughters, according to Yahoo News. Her revelation comes after actress Jameela Jamil spoke out Monday on Twitter about an abortion she had, claiming it was the best decision for her.
“I had an abortion when I was young, and it was the best decision I have ever made. Both for me, and for the baby I didn’t want, and wasn’t ready for, emotionally, psychologically and financially,” Jamil tweeted. “So many children will end up in foster homes. So many lives ruined. So very cruel.”
