Firefighters ‘Not Sure’ If They Can Contain Notre Dame Cathedral Fire

French firefighters were not sure if the Notre Dame Cathedral fire that broke Monday could be contained.
“We’re not sure of being able to stop the spread of the fire in the north belfry,” a spokesman for Paris’s firefighters said, according to The New York Times Monday.
“The next hour and a half will be decisive,” the spokesman continued, The NYT reported.
Nearly 400 were deployed to battle the fire, according to The NYT.
Deputy Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said it was “not certain” whether the church could be saved as well, The Local France reported.
A Gothic engineering technique used to waterproof the top of the cathedral may have contributed to firefighters having a difficult time putting out the flames.
The Notre Dame was under extensive renovation, according to The NYT.
The fire could have been linked to the renovations.
Paris deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said some of the artwork in the cathedral were rescued, but firefighters were forced to leave the structure as the fire spread quickly, The Local France reported.
