Zinke is one of a handful of candidates whom President Donald Trump is considering for the post, said two senior Trump administration officials, according to Fox News. The interior secretary was scheduled to meet with Trump Wednesday to discuss “the U.N. role and other issues,” according to a source cited by Fox News.
A former Navy SEAL, Zinke represented Montana in the House as a Republican from 2015 to 2017 and served on the House Armed Services Committee. He has served in Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo and South Korea during his 23-year military career.
Zinke “has talked to several people about the job and appears to want it,” reported Fox News.
Former deputy national security adviser for strategy Dina Powell is believed to be the frontrunner for the position. Trump confirmed that Powell is on his short list of five candidates while he was aboard Air Force One Wednesday.
Zinke has served as secretary of the Department of the Interior since the beginning of Trump’s administration. His department oversees agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, the United States Geological Survey and the National Park Service.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to the White House and the Department of the Interior but did not receive an immediate response.
