CNN devoted an entire segment on “New Day” Thursday to picking apart President Donald Trump’s Wednesday Op-Ed for USA Today.

The article centered on the Democrats’ Medicare for all plan and highlighted the fiscal issues of such a program.

“USA Today published this op-ed by President Trump titled: ‘Democrats’ Medicare For All Plan Will Demolish Promises To Seniors.’ Now normally it’s just an honor to run a piece from the president, but normally columns are fact checked even from the president,” CNN commentator John Avlon said. “And that’s where things fell apart fast here.”

“If the president says something that may make it news but that doesn’t mean it’s true,” he continued.

Avlon cited The Washington Post’s fact check editor Glenn Kessler, who claimed “almost every sentence” of Trump’s article “contained a misleading statement or a falsehood.”

“To be clear, there are plenty of rational reasons to oppose Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for all bill,” Avlon added. “Too bad the president did not take that path.”

Avlon said Trump’s point about the program being too expensive has merit but then attacked the president for a lack of “moral authority when it comes deficit and the debt.”

Avlon then showed a USA Today headline claiming Trump wants to “kill Obamacare in darkness” and said his article’s summation was nothing more than “fear mongering.”

Trump wrote “the new Democrats are radical socialists who want to model America’s economy after Venezuela” and Avlon immediately took issue with this statement

“Venezuela is a socialist dictatorship with hyper-inflation and few civil liberties. No major elected Democrats suggested anything remotely like importing the morally and fiscally bankrupt model the Venezuela model to the United States,” he concluded. “These are just a few choice nuggets of nonsense from the president’s op-ed.”
