Hundreds are dead and thousands of homes are leveled after an earthquake and tsunami struck Indonesia Friday.
The official death toll of the twin natural disasters hit more than 1,400 Wednesday. The earthquake triggered the process of liquefaction – where moist soil, shaken violently, begins to flow – that literally shifted homes dozens of feet and reduced thousands to rubble, The New York Times reports.

Roughly 4,400 buildings are thought to have been destroyed in the city of Palu. Donggala, a neighboring town, lost 773, Indonesia disaster management agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told TheNYT.

Tensions between Indonesia residents and emergency officials are rising, and police have started using tear gas to repel would-be looters from stores and shops, The BBC reports.
“After day two the food supply started to come in, it only needed to be distributed,” deputy national police chief Ari Dono Sukmanto told BBC. “We are now re-enforcing the law.”
