Planned Parenthood’s new president Dr. Leana Wen appeared on “The View” Thursday and faced criticism about the organization’s history of inconsistent transparency.
” … Planned Parenthood provides more abortions, the most abortions than any other health care provider in the United States. And in fact, in I think 2016, Planned Parenthood provided 328,348 abortions,” co-host Sunny Hostin said. ” … that’s more than, well, women exams, pap tests, HPV vaccinations … But Planned Parenthood, I don’t think, is transparent about that. Planned Parenthood says it’s only 3 percent of their services,” Hostin continued, asking Wen why the abortion organization isn’t more transparent about its true position.
Hostin cited a Washington Post fact check on Planned Parenthood’s claim that abortions make up 3 percent of its services and found the claim false, estimating the percentage to be at about four times greater.
“Planned Parenthood just like every major medical organization that I’ve ever worked for follows the law and is transparent … Over 90 percent of the services performed are preventative care services,” Wen responded.
“It seems to me that Planned Parenthood is trying to have it both ways,” Hostin said.
Planned Parenthood reportedly faced investigations into allegations in 2017 it illegally sold aborted baby body parts for profit, based on undercover videos from 2015.
“I know part of your role, you want to make it less political and you want to make it something for every woman but that’s a real challenge that you guys have on your plate. Do you understand why people have a hard time with it?” co-host Abby Huntsman asked Wen.
“Health care shouldn’t be political. Needing medications for your children isn’t political,” Wen answered.
When asked about Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, Wen responded that she isn’t reassured that Roe v. Wade won’t be overturned, referring to Trump’s “litmus test” of appointing a judge who will overturn the 1973 law.
“I’m taking on this role, in part because I’m a new mother myself,” Wen said, adding that “nothing has been more clarifying for me than being a parent.”
She also said that her decision to lead Planned Parenthood isn’t political but “deeply personal.”
“[Abortion] should be a decision that a parent and a doctor make,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg added. ” … I don’t want my money going to all these wars but I understand that as an American citizen that’s what you have to do. There’s a lot of stuff I don’t want to pay for. There’s a lot of stuff most people don’t want to pay for, but as citizens, this is part of what we have to do as Americans.”
