Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana called Wednesday for an end to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling during President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
“Thought provoking piece by [former U.S. attorney Andrew McCarthy] underscores the need for Mueller to finish up. If there’s no evidence regarding potus, admit it,” Cassidy tweeted. “America’s justice system should not be weaponized — especially with taxpayers footing the bill.”

The National Review piece Cassidy referred to questioned the legal basis for the ongoing probe, which Mueller has been investigating for 16 months. Not only has there been no Russian interference-related charges for any Trump campaign official, but the unsubstantiated Steele dossier is the only evidence of collusion against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
Approximately $17 million has been spent on Mueller’s investigation as of May.
