Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina came to the defense of Meghan McCain on Sunday after she seemingly criticized President Donald Trump during her father’s funeral service.
“If you say something bad about Meghan’s father, you will know it,” Graham said on “Fox News Sunday.”
“She didn’t like it,” Graham continued. “So it’s okay, she’s grieving.”
McCain, the daughter of former Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, faced heavy backlash from Trump supporters after she seemingly directed a comment at the president, stating that “America was always great.”
“We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness,” she told mourners during her eulogy Saturday. “The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served.”
Both Meghan and her father have been frequent critics of the president, both personally and politically. Trump notably did not attend the funeral service at the request of the Arizona senator himself.
Graham was regarded as one of John McCain’s closest friends in Washington, D.C.
