CNN’s “New Day” interviewed disgraced retired Gen. David Petraeus Wednesday, asking for his opinion on President Donald Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Co-host John Berman asked if Trump is being “too solicitous of Vladimir Putin.” Petraeus responded the president has been too “charitable” with the Russian leader. “Well, I recall again another great line from Sen. McCain talking about another president looking into the eyes of Vladimir Putin and McCain said he saw KGB,” he declared.

Petraeus said America’s attitude towards Putin is too soft and claimed former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates once described Putin as a cold-hearted killer.

“I’ve seen the same over the years. Secretary Gates said he saw a stone cold killer,” Petraeus concluded. “So yeah I think occasionally we’ve been too charitable to put it mildly.”

Petraeus resigned as director of the CIA back in November 2012, after he was caught having an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.
