McConnell Says He Has ‘Total Confidence’ In Jeff Sessions Amid Feud With Trump

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters on Capitol Hill that he has “total confidence” in Attorney General Jeff Sessions amid the controversy between him and President Donald Trump.

McConnell told reporters Thursday that Sessions “ought to stay exactly where he is” when asked about Trump’s criticism toward Sessions. Trump has been attacking Sessions for not firing Bruce Ohr, a Department of Justice lawyer intimately involved with pushing the Steele dossier in the FBI during the 2016 presidential campaign, stirring up rumors that Trump could soon fire Sessions.

Trump has also criticized Sessions in the past for not taking control of the Justice Department, saying in an interview with Fox News, “I put in an attorney general that never took control of the Justice Department, Jeff Sessions.”

“He took the job and then he said, ‘I’m going to recuse myself,'” Trump said. “I said, ‘What kind of man is this?’ And by the way, he was on the campaign. The only reason I gave him the job, I felt loyalty. He was an original supporter.”

McConnell has made no mention of replacing Sessions at the DOJ nor has he taken a public position against the attorney general before he assumed office in February 2017.
