The woman behind the abuse allegations against Democratic National Committee Deputy Chairman Rep. Keith Ellison suggested in a Tweet Tuesday afternoon that her children have undergone “trauma” because of his behavior.
Karen Monahan replied to a tweet from a domestic violence help center account that shared an article about the impact witnessing abuse can have on a roommate or family member.
“My kids are dealing w/ their own trauma due to my situation. As a mother, I’ve not only dealt w/ my trauma but also the trauma my kids have/are dealing with,” Monahan said.

Ellison has faced increasing pressure over his position as deputy chairman since Monahan’s son first came forward earlier in August by saying he witnessed a video of Ellison abusing his mother.
“I was using my moms computer trying to download something and I clicked on a file, I found over 100 text and twitters messages and video almost 2 min long that showed Keith Ellison dragging my mama off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her a ‘fucking bitch’ and telling her to get the fuck out of his house,” Austin wrote on Facebook on Aug. 11.
The DNC said on Aug. 14 it would undergo a review of the allegations against Ellison.
“These allegations recently came to light and we are reviewing them,” the DNC said in a statement. “All allegations of domestic abuse are disturbing and should be taken seriously.”
Ellison eventually responded to the allegations on Aug. 15 in an interview with a local Minnesota news channel and said the two “don’t have to destroy each other” because of Monahan’s allegations.
A request for comment from Monahan was not returned.
