Australian Sen. Fraser Anning drew universal condemnation from Australia’s major parties for proposing a ban on Muslim migrants as a “final solution” to immigration issues.
Anning advocated in his first speech to Parliament for a return to Australia’s historic “White Australia” policy, which favored European immigrants over those of other nationalities to preserve “the historic European-Christian composition of Australian society.” Anning remained stalwart in his support for the idea despite drawing heavy criticism from the country’s major political parties and condemnation from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
“Diversity should be managed to remain compatible with social cohesion and national identity. We as a nation are entitled to insist that those who are allowed to come here predominantly reflect the historic European-Christian composition of Australian society,” Anning said during his speech, according to NPR.
“The final solution to the immigration problem, of course, is a popular vote,” he added.
Anning specifically highlighted the threats of what he called “welfare-bludgers” and “black African Muslim gangs terrorizing Melbourne.”
“While all Muslims are not terrorists, certainly all terrorists these days are Muslims, so why would anyone want to bring more of them here?” he asked.
When pressed about whether he meant to be antisemitic by referencing the “final solution,” Anning denied it, saying that he had always been supportive of the Jewish community.
When asked whether he thought he should apologize, Anning said, “No, I don’t apologize for anything I say.”
