Tourists fear the holy water at the iconic Parisian landmark, the cathedral of Notre Dame, was allegedly poisoned.
Catholic visitors complained that they received headaches and their faces tingled after touching the holy water in the cathedral Friday, according to the Daily Mail. A local priest also claimed that the holy water by the entrance smelled bad, according to Le Parisien.
“What do you want! It is unfortunately an act of malice. They want to poison the world!” the priest said.
“If it is a desecration, we will seize the subject with the greatest gravity,” added Mayor Ariel Weil of the fourth arrondissement Saturday, according to Le Parisien.
Officials emptied the holy water, bleached the stone basin, and replaced it with fresh water.
Police determined that the bad holy water was no threat to the public.
The alleged threat comes after holy water at the Notre Dame cathedral in Dijon, France, was contaminated by a vandal. François Rebsamen, the mayor of Dijon condemned the attack.
