Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas didn’t hold back Friday as he condemned sanctuary cities for their dangerous refusal to follow federal immigration laws.
While on “Fox & Friends,” the Texas governor reacted to the recent bombshell that a previously deported illegal alien, who is in prison for raping a child after the city of Philadelphia ignored the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer request, pleaded guilty to illegally re-entering the United States.
“What’s going on in Philadelphia is like an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ story where it’s topsy-turvy where the mayor is blaming ICE or the federal government for trying to enforce the laws for being the cause of this rape,” Abbott said. “That is insanity!”
“It is these sanctuary city policies that both attract and allow in people who commit these heinous crimes — just exactly what happened to Kate Steinle in San Francisco — what happened in Philadelphia is not the only story like this,” Abbott continued.
Texas has been on the forefront of the fight against sanctuary cities, a matter Abbott has been vocal about.
“Sanctuary cities are banned in the state of Texas. I think Texas is either the first or maybe the only state in the United States that passed a law banning sanctuary cities,” the Texas governor replied when asked how many sanctuary cities were in Texas.
Texas passed Senate Bill 4 in November 2016, effectively banning sanctuary cities. Abbott signed it six months later.
