Democrats are reportedly tossing Richard Gere’s name around as a potential contender to run for Congress in New York’s 18th congressional district.
Democratic Rep. Patrick Maloney is running in the primary for New York’s attorney general in September, leaving his House seat wide open if he wins, according to Page Six.
“Richard Gere’s name is being whispered about among Democrats. We’ll see what he’s made of,” Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano said, according to Page Six. “The bottom line is I want to elect a Democrat to kill the Trump agenda.”
Gere’s political activism has been long associated with his opposition to the human rights abuses in Chinese-held Tibet. The registered Democrat and New York resident blames his activism in China — the second highest box office market — for not getting certain roles, according to Independent.
“Richard is real fun. On Election Day he comes up to each election inspector and personally thanks us for our work,” Ellen Kearns of Westchester County Democratic Party told Page Six.
Gere is a harsh critic of President Donald Trump, and attributes political and social divide in America to the president’s rhetoric on illegals and protecting U.S. border control, according to Deadline.
“The number of hate crimes went up enormously as soon as Donald Trump started running for president, in the United States and in Europe … Unfortunately, we have leaders that stimulate fear, and that fear causes us to do really terrible things. We have to be really careful how we talk to each other and characterize each other,” Gere said about Trump at the Berlin Film Festival at the 2017 premier of “The Dinner,” according to Deadline.
