Joe Scarborough Tries To Convince Himself Of Democratic Wave This November: ‘People Don’t Always Vote Their Pocketbook’

Joe Scarborough tried to convince himself Democrats could still win big this November and said voters aren’t always swayed by a strong economy.

“It’s really interesting. We always say that people vote their pocketbooks and we’ve been saying this for a very long time — but they don’t in off year elections,” Scarborough said on “Morning Joe” Monday. “And we’ll see what the 4.1 [percent GDP growth] is in the third quarter. Most economists say it’s going to go back down significantly. But we shall see.”

Scarborough continued to make the case for an anti-Trump wave and began listing examples of poor performances by the president’s party, during a midterm election year.

“You know in ’94, Bill Clinton had a great economy, but he was seen out of touch with the mainstream of America. And there’s a massive Republican tidal wave,” he continued. “2006, the economy was going pretty darn well, but again, that was post [Hurricane] Katrina. That was in the middle of Iraq. Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House.”

Scarborough claimed voters don’t always vote with their pocketbooks and said social issues, along with President Donald Trump’s “leadership style” would serve as the deciding factors.

“People don’t always vote their pocketbook in midterm elections,” he concluded. “Often, they vote in reaction to what they’ve seen in the past two years on cultural issues or even a leadership style.”
