States are going through additional measures to protect abortion at the state level in looming fear that Supreme Court Nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation could result in Roe being overturned.
Massachusetts first passed The Negating Archaic Statutes Targeting Young Women Act on July 19, repealing laws from 1845. Some of these laws date back well over 150 years and have been under constant challenge in recent times, making them essentially irrelevant, according to Mass Live.
The Nasty Woman Act is expected to be signed by Massachusetts Republican Gov. Charlie Baker who is “conceptually” in favor of the bill, according to Mass Live.
“Gov. Baker fully supports access to women’s healthcare and family planning services in the commonwealth, supports the concept of the NASTY Women Act and will carefully review the final legislation on his desk,” said Deputy Press Secretary Anisha Chakrabarti, according to Washington Examiner.
However, the state of Massachusetts already ensures protection for Massachusetts women regarding abortion and other reproductive issues, reports Time.
“This is one of the most homogenous pro-abortion states in the union … This whole legislation is an exercise in posturing and pandering,” said executive director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts C.J. Doyle, according to The Hill.
These laws that remained in tact for so long, held adultery and fornication as criminal acts, abortion as unlawful, and the distribution of illicit material — including information about contraception and abortion — a punishable offense, according to Mass Live.
Other states are launching their own fights for abortion rights. New Mexico legislature plans on repealing their state’s abortion ban once they come back for session, according to Washington Examiner, and Democratic Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo wants state legislators to enact abortion rights in preparation of protection, according to Time.
Reproductive rights groups are expanding their activism through state law in which they have introduced 404 bills to 44 state legislatures, according to the National Institute for Reproductive Health.
Additional states that have expanded their abortion rights access and agenda include Illinois, Delaware, Rhode Island, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Oregon, New Jersey, Nevada and Washington state.
There are currently four conservative states that have in place abortion bans once Roe is overturned, according to Guttmacher Institute.
