A woman who made terror threats to a Rochester, New York, high school may face deportation after officials found out about her immigration status.
Abigail Hernandez, 21, is currently under federal custody for not having proper documentation. Hernandez’s mother brought her to the U.S. from Mexico at three-years0old. She was a special education student who received a certificate for “students with the most severe disabilities.”
While her mother and step-father hold green cards, Hernandez is considered as part of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Hernandez’s immigration status was brought to the forefront after threatening to shoot students at East High School in Rochester.
“I’m coming tomorrow morning and I’m going to shoot all of ya b*tches,” she anonymously wrote on the school’s Facebook page on Feb. 15.
The Facebook post referenced and sympathized with the Parkland shooting that happened on Feb. 14, according to police officials. Police found a shotgun in her home, though the step-father claims that he owns the gun.
While Hernandez was arrested on Feb. 20 for making terror threats, her parents say she is not a terrorist. Her parents did not believe Hernandez was capable of going through with the shooting because “she has very low cognitive capability.”
The felony terror charge was eventually dropped, but the credible threats brought attention to her immigration status, eventually leading to Hernandez being brought to federal custody Wednesday.
Democrat and Chronicle columnist David Andreatta wrote Hernandez should not be deported.
“In the eyes of the justice system, Hernandez was held accountable for her actions. Now the federal government wants to hold her accountable for the actions of her mother and send her ‘home.’ That’s not justice. She is home,”Andreatta wrote.
Hernandez’s mentor Rita Gaither said in a different article by the Democrat and Chronicle, “It’s time for the sensationalism to stop.”
