Protesters temporarily blocked a border port of entry in Texas as a response to President Donald Trump’s zero tolerance immigration policy on Wednesday.
Abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement protesters came from around the country to Tornillo, Texas, to demand the Trump administration “stop caging and prosecuting immigrants,” according to a tweet by activist group Mijente. Mijente describes itself as, “A new political home for Latinx & Chicanx organizing.”
Tornillo is home to a detention facility for immigrant children.
Protesters held signs, some of which read “Free Our Future” and “F*ck All Cages,” according to a picture tweeted by the Working Families Party. Protesters claimed to have shut down the border, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection Public Affairs Specialist Roger Maier said otherwise.
“The border was not shut down,” Maier told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “While the primary entry/exit points at the Marcelino Serna Port of Entry were temporarily blocked during protests earlier [Wednesday] U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers continued to process legitimate trade and travel.”
The protest in Tornillo is part of a larger campaign called “#FreeOurFuture.” Activists plan to “Shut down [Attorney General] Jeff Session,” according to a description for a San Diego event.
