Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini claimed in a tweet Friday the former prime minister let the country get overrun by thousands of refugees.
Salvini, Italy’s new interior minister from the nationalistic “Lega Nord” party, called out former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi for his refugee policy, he wrote in a tweet. Salvini wrote a tweet in response to Renzi declaring that he was “ashamed” of the interior minister’s handling of migrants, Huffington Post reported. “Renzi said that he is ASHAMED of my words. I believe that he should be ashamed for allowing the country to be overrun by hundreds of thousands of alleged refugees. A mistake? I assure you that I will put out a remedy to the disasters of the (Democrat Party) PD,” Salvini wrote. The prime minister also included a photo, saying, “Renzi: Salvini makes me ashamed. How should we answer that?” Salvini used a candid shot of the Renzi holding an ice cream cone in his response. (RELATED: Conte: ‘The Time Has Come To Change The Page’ On Immigration In Europe)
Salvini caused controversy after refusing to allow the rescue ship Aquarius carrying 629 migrants from Libya to dock in Italy last weekend. The ship ended up landing in Valencia, Spain. The politician has also vowed to crack down on illegal immigrants, going as far as to tell migrants to “pack your bags” during a rally in June.
