South Carolina Governor McMaster Faces GOP Primary Runoff

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster was forced into a runoff election after failing to receive enough votes in Tuesday night’s Republican gubernatorial primary, despite an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
McMaster, who succeeded current U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, was up against four other Republican candidates in the important primary election, but failed to receive the necessary 50 percent of the vote. The current Republican governor received 44% of the vote compared to his closest opponent, businessman John Warren, who received 25.7% of the vote, Politico reported.
The win comes days after Trump endorsedMcMaster in a tweet, saying he is “doing a fantastic job” as governor and said he “is strong on Crime and Borders, great for our Military and our Vets.”

The winner of the June 26 runoff will take on liberal candidate Rep. James Smith, who won Tuesday night’s Democratic primary, in the Nov. 6 general election.
