Hobart and William Smith Colleges will offer a fall 2019 course that will teach students how to eat and think about food if they consider themselves feminists.

Taught by professor Jessica Hayes-Conroy, “Food, Feminism, and Health” will teach students about the “political ecologies of health” which include decolonizing and deconstructing the “violent displacement” that occurs in the making and eating of food, according to the course description.

Course readings will include materials on feminist sciences, social theory, cultural studies and public health among others. The course is part of the college’s Women’s Studies Program.

Hayes-Conroy will also pull from a book on feminist nutrition which she edited, “Doing Nutrition Differently: Critical Approaches to Diet and Dietary Intervention.” Hayes-Conroy contributed a chapter to the book which draws parallels between feminist activism and the foods that women eat.

The book relies heavily on the idea of “hegemonic nutrition” which “re-casts the objectives of dietary intervention,” in order to spur a feminist nutrition revolution.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges value “gender, gender expression, gender identity,” and has crafted its courses “for the benefit of students,”the school writes on its course catalogue. Hobart and William Smith Colleges were initially operated as separate single-sex colleges, but are now integrated and share the same campus in New York state.

Campus Reform also wrote a Tuesday article on the upcoming course.
