New Frida Kahlo Art Exhibit Allows Visitors To See Her Prosthetic Leg

A new Frida Kahlo art exhibit in London will allow visitors to see her prosthetic leg decked out with a red lace-up boot, according to The Guardian Tuesday.
Mexican modern artist Kahlo’s art and personal belongings will be featured at the Victoria and Albert Museum, according to The Guardian. The exhibit called “Frida Kahlo: Making Herself Up” features the tortured artist’s makeup, dresses, self-portraits, photographs, and a prosthetic leg. “It’s true, she wore it bravely,” writes Jonathan Jones for The Guardian. “Everything about Kahlo was courageous. She was a revolutionary, a passionate lover, a bold artist. As a child she survived polio, then in 1925, when she was 18, she was in a bus crash that left her with lifelong disability and pain.” Polio caused deformity in Kahlo’s leg, eventually leading to her getting her leg amputated in 1953, The Guardian noted. Kahlo was married to artist Diego Riviera who had many affairs while being married. Both artists were vocal communists. Kahlo even painted a hammer and sickle on one of her body casts. (RELATED: A Once Scandalous Nude Painting Sold For $157 Million)
The exhibit will be open to visitors starting June 16.
