California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein said in a Sunday interview that she didn’t know about issues regarding the treatment of illegal immigrants until the Trump administration.
“Candidly, I didn’t really know enough about it at that time enough to focus on it. I do know enough about it now,” Feinstein said on CNN’s “State Of The Union” Sunday morning. Feinstein was referencing the Trump administration policy of separating illegal immigrants who are arrested from their children.
The California senator continued to say that separating families at the border was “inhumane, callous, and something I never thought my country would do.”

Feinstein introduced a bill Thursday titled “A bill to limit the separation of families at or near ports of entry.” The bill would set criteria for separating families at the border.
Feinstein comments belie her past comments on immigration. “The day when America could be the welfare system for Mexico is gone. We simply can’t afford it,” Feinstein said in a 1993 C-SPAN clip.
