Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort continued talking to his Russian associate Konstantin V. Kilimnik after he was indicted in October 2017, according to a New York Times report.
The special counsel identified the associate on Friday and charged both he and Manafort with obstruction of justice. Manafort and Kilmnik allegedly worked together to persuade witnesses to lie about a project tied to the two. The project, known as The Hapsburg Group, worked to lobby politicians for causes that would benefit former Ukrainian President Viktor F. Yanukovych.
The pair reportedly told associates to lie to the special council about the scope of the group’s work, saying that they only lobbied in Europe. If they did in fact lobby in the United States, the group would have had to be registered with the Justice Department.
Those close to Manafort said that they told him to stop talking to Kilimnik for fear of their conversations being watched.
“[Kilimnik] is one of the best interpreters and translators. On everything else, he is a dumbass,” a former Ukrainian employee of Manafort said, according to the New York Times.
