Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California flip-flopped and changed her position on the death penalty Wednesday, as she faces a difficult June 5 primary to keep her Senate seat.

“It became crystal clear to me that the risk of unequal application is high and its effect on deterrence is low,” Feinstein said Wednesday, according to Fox News. She changed her mind on this issue “several years ago,” she claimed.

Democratic state Sen. Kevin de Leon is challenging Feinstein for the seat and his spokesman Jonathan Underland said she has become too much of a centrist.

“This latest flip on the death penalty is yet another appeal to California voters who have outgrown her centrist bent,” Underland said, according to Fox News.

The top two candidates with the most votes will advance to the general election, despite party affiliation.
