Progressive activist and billionaire George Soros is trying to put his finger on the scale of a several District Attorney races in California, by donating millions of dollars to his preferred candidates.
Soros provided $1.5 million to public defender Genevieve Jones-Wright through a political action committee, in an effort to promote her in her bid to become San Diego’s DA, according to The Los Angeles Times.
When challenged on her links to Soros, Jones-Wright played it off as a positive and said he was giving a voice to the disenfranchised by donating cash to her campaign.
“I love it!” she said at a recent fundraiser. “If he didn’t take an interest in this campaign, it would be an even more uneven playing field.”
Other billionaires have joined Soros’ cash dump, claiming they want DA’s who will crack down on police brutality and reform the incarceration system. The races are meant to be non-partisan but with these latest donations, political battle lines have been drawn.
“If they win in San Diego or Sacramento, L.A. is next,” he said.
This strategy seems to mimic Soros’ Secretary of State project which sought to fund candidates for the office of Secretary of State, with the hopes of securing favorable results in the case of a close election or recount.
