A 5-year-old Missouri boy accidentally shot his older brother with a gun while looking for candy in his house, according to the family.
A spokeswoman for the family explained they believe the boy stumbled across their father’s gun in dresser drawer while looking for candy Saturday, according to The Associated Press.
Instead, he found a gun. Not knowing the difference between the gun and a toy one, he fired it at his brother Jermon Perry, family spokesperson Erica Jones said. The family was outside when the shooting occurred, according to Jones.
“He never thought the kids would get to the gun. They were in a upstairs bedroom and their mother was in the kitchen cooking,” Jones told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “She normally hides candy from them so they don’t go in there and eat it all.”
Police officers are investigating the incident as a “sudden suspicious death” and have not filed any charges. They believe three brothers were upstairs when one of them shot the other in the head while adults where downstairs.
Perry died at the hospital from his gun wounds.
