Sacramento, Calif., police officers fatally shot a black man in his back six times, according to an independent autopsy.

The family of Stephon Clark, a black man fatally shot by officers last week, conducted an independent autopsy on his body. The autopsy revealed that eight bullets entered Clark’s body, six of which came in through his back. The other two came through his side and his left thigh.

“The narrative that had been put forth was that they had to open fire because he was charging at them,” said Benjamin Crump, a lawyer for the Clark family. “Well obviously, based on Dr. Omalu’s findings and the family’s autopsy, it suggests all the bullets were from behind.”

Officers previously said they shot Clark after responding to a call about a man breaking into cars in the Sacramento neighborhood. They claimed Clark approached them with what appeared to be a gun in his hands.

Only a cellphone was recovered at the scene.

The Sacramento County Coroner conducted a preliminary study on the body and ruled the cause of death was a homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds to the body. They have not released other information about the autopsy.
