Driverless Uber Runs Over Woman In Arizona

One of Uber’s self-driving cars hit and killed a woman in Arizona Monday, causing the company to halt testing of autonomous technology.

Police say one of the autonomous Uber cars in Tempe, Ariz., struck the woman who was walking outside the crosswalk, Fox 10 Arizona reports. The woman was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Uber said it was cooperating with investigations, and that it would suspend testing driverless cars in other cities, including Phoenix, San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Toronto.

Police report that there was a driver behind the wheel of the car, but it was in autonomous mode.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi expressed his condolences on Twitter.

Other driverless cars have run into people and caused minor injuries, but this is the first known fatality from an autonomous vehicle.
