Former NAACP President Condemns Farrakhan’s Anti-Semitic Statements: ‘It’s Dangerous’

The former president for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People strongly condemned Thursday anti-Semitic comments made by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

Women’s March leaders have been hesitant to call out Farrakhan for his bigotry, however, former NAACP President Cornell Brooks pointed out how dangerous for America such beliefs can be.

“#Hatecrimes don’t begin with crime—they begin with hate. Scapegoating, stereotyping, race-blaming & ethnic shaming of Jews is not only wrong, it’s dangerous—to Jews as well as all Americans. People victimize those they first refuse to see as as human. Hate blinds—& destroys,” Brooks tweeted.

Brooks has been one of the few civil rights leaders to strongly come out against Farrakhan’s noted anti-Semitism. Women’s March leaders and Democratic congressmen have either issued tepid responses to Farrakhan’s long history of blaming Jewish people for the problems in the world or refused to distance themselves from the minister and his work.

“Minister Farrakhan’s statements about Jewish, queer and trans people are not aligned with the Women’s March Unity Principles, which were created by women of color leaders and are grounded in Kingian nonviolence,” the Women’s March said in a statement, which did not include a direct apology for their ties to Farrakhan.
