Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students returned to school Wednesday, two weeks after the massacre resulting in 17 students and faculty losing their lives.
Hundreds of policemen entered the Parkland, Fa., school and high-fived students as they returned, according to The Washington Post. Flowers and memorials adorn the school’s exterior, and students could pet and kiss support dogs and a cluster of ponies on school grounds.
“Looking forward to tomorrow Eagles!” Marjory Stoneman principal Ty Thompson tweeted Tuesday night. “Remember, our focus is on emotional readiness and comfort not curriculum: so there is no need for backpacks. Come ready to start the healing process and #RECLAIMTHENEST.”
The students will only attend a half-day of classes for the Feb. 26 – Mar. 2 week.
“I’m excited,” freshman Bruna Oliveira said — she witnessed her favorite teacher getting shot in the chest. “I want to see my friends and my teachers.”
