Michelle Obama Announces Memoir About Accomplishments

Michelle Obama’s memoir will be released in November, which chronicles her life and accomplishments, the former first lady announced Sunday.

The book “Becoming” will tell Obama’s story from her childhood in Chicago, Ill., to her time as first lady, “the first African-American to serve in that role,” according to an announcement from publisher Penguin Random House.

“Writing ‘BECOMING’ has been a deeply personal experience,” Obama said in a tweet announcing the book. “I talk about my roots and how a girl from the South Side found her voice.”

The book, set to release Nov. 13, “is an unusually intimate reckoning from a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations — and whose story inspires us to do the same,” Penguin CEO Marcus Dohle said in a press release.

In a short description for the book, the publisher says Obama “helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history.”

As First Lady of the United States of America — the first African-American to serve in that role — she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare

In addition to English, the book will be released in 24 different languages, and Obama will narrate an audio version. Obama’s first book, “American Grown,” entails the garden she planted when she arrived at the White House.

The rights to Michelle Obama’s book and an unannounced memoir from her former-president husband are rumored to be worth $60 million, the Financial Times reported in 2017.

Since departing the White House in January 2017,  the family has lived part-time at their Washington, D.C., home. While former President Barack Obama delivered some speeches and campaigned for select Democratic candidates, Michelle has not been very active in politics since leaving the White House.
