Gillibrand Calls For DOJ To Investigate US Olympic Committee

Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand wrote a letter urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the United States Olympic Committee following Dr. Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse scandal.
The New York senator is asking the DOJ to look into the U.S. Olympic Committee’s possible complicity in Nassar’s crimes by failing to protect hundreds of girls and young women who were molested by the once-renowned doctor.
“It is incumbent on the Department of Justice to investigate whether there was a legal duty as well,” Gillibrand wrote in a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“Their inaction resulted in the abuse of even more young women and girls,” Gillibrand added. “His crimes were facilitated by a culture of silencing victims and valuing a doctor over the vulnerable children he was supposed to heal.”
Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire are co-sponsors with Gillibrand on legislation seeking to create a special committee to investigate the U.S. Olympics Committee.
The FBI knew about Nassar’s actions since 2015 but chose not to take action, according to a report from The New York Times.
Nassar will serve 40 to 175 years in prison for sexual abuse, and was also sentenced Monday to another 60 years in prison for sexual abuse, CNN reported.
