Authorities recovered a man’s body from a water pipeline in California Tuesday after he reportedly fell into the line through a vent, KCRA-TV reports.
The pipeline carries water a mile and a half from a lake to a water treatment facility where it is heavily treated before it’s sent to households. El Dorado County, Calif., water officials say water quality was not affected by the corpse.
“This is the first time this has ever happened,” an official told KCRA-TV.
About 40,000 residents living in the surrounding area were asked to conserve water after the incident was reported. Authorities did not believe the man would be found alive because of the length of the pipeline, the temperature of the water and other circumstances, according to The Associated Press.
Authorities are investigating exactly how and why the man allegedly climbed into the closed off area of the vent and fell through.
