Popular California Beaches Turned Into Literal ‘Sh*tholes’ After Sewage Plant Leaks

A technical failure at a California wastewater treatment facility allowed millions of gallons of raw sewage to leak into the ocean Saturday, resulting in numerous beach closures.
4.9 million gallons of sewage spilled from the Monterey One Water wastewater treatment facility early Saturday morning after an equipment failure. It’s unclear how long the spill continued before it was eventually stopped at 4:30 a.m. PST Saturday, the Monterey County Environmental Health Department reported.
Health Department officials tested ocean water around the treatment facility Sunday, according to the Health Department website. Eight nearby beaches will remain closed until tests indicate the water is declared safe.
The spill comes days after 1,500 gallons of sewage spilled into a storm drain in Monterey. The Health Department also posted warnings on Jan. 16 after finding alarming levels of bacteria in the water at the Monterey Municipal Beach.
