SCOTUS Halts Redrawing Of North Carolina District Maps

The Supreme Court halted an order Thursday that instructed Republicans to redraw district lines in North Carolina so the party would no longer have an edge in various elections.
The temporary hold on the lower court opinion allows Republicans to keep their current advantage in the state, reports Bloomberg. The current lines seemingly benefited the Republican Party — in 2016, they scooped up 10 House of Representative seats out of 13 seats.
A previous lower court opinion ruled that the district lines were a form of unconstitutional gerrymandering, according to the panel of three judges presiding over the case.
The judges ruled that the district lines violated the First Amendment because they were “unjustifiably discriminating against voters based on their previous political expression and affiliation.” The judges also added that Republicans had passed the measure “with the intent of discriminating against voters who favored non-Republican candidates.”
Two justices, Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor, dissented in the Supreme Court ruling.
