An Ohio middle school teacher reportedly told a black student to get back to work or he might get lynched, according to the mother of the student.
The white Mason Middle School teacher admitted to telling 13-year-old- Nathan that if he didn’t sit down and finish his work, his fellow classmates would “form an angry mob and lynch you,” according to mother Tanisha Agee-Bell.
“I was just taken aback because I said, ‘What you said is actually worse than what he said you said,'” Agee-Bell said. “He had told her, ‘That’s racist.'” Agree-Bell has since removed her son from the classroom.
A spokesperson for the school gave confirmation that the situation had occurred to Cincinnati.com, but said that teachers sometimes make mistakes.
“As educators, sometimes we mess up. And clearly that happened here,” Mason Schools spokeswoman Tracey Carson said. “We have seen an uptick in the number of racially and culturally insensitive comments in our schools and community. Sometimes these are said out of genuine ignorance. For example, some students contend that they are not being offensive if they say n***a vs. the n-word. As a district, we want to be very clear. We are not OK normalizing racial slurs. Anyone who does so faces disciplinary action.”
