H&M apologized after putting a black child model in a “Coolest Monkey” sweatshirt after customers complained that it is racist and started a boycott, according to a report Monday.
The Swedish fashion retailer offered apologies after being accused of racism for advertising their “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle” sweatshirt on a black child model, reported Buzzfeed News. The sweatshirt is no longer sold in the U.S. but still sold online in other countries, added CNBC.
A multi billion dollar company thinks it’s okay to put a young brown boy in a #coolestmonkeyinthejungle hoodie? I see you @hm#BoycottHM#BoycottHandM#BlackDollarsMatterpic.twitter.com/gQS7yCMDr6

Another Twitter user called it a “projection of your neo-colonial thinking” since the white child model was wearing a “Survival Sweatshirt” compared to the black child model wearing the “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” sweatshirt.
So the black kid gets to wear the H&M sweater with “Coolest monkey in the jungle” and the white kid with “Survival expert”. This is beyond disgusting. It’s a projection of your neocolonial thinking. You won’t see me anywhere near your shops these days @hm pic.twitter.com/5FS9HHvhKu

“This image has been removed from all H&M channels and we sincerely apologise for any offence this has caused,” said an H&M spokesperson to BuzzFeed News in a statement.
The retail giant is also reviewing their internal routine so that there will not be another form of “misjudgment”.
