Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon expressed “regret” after comments deeply critical of the Trump family appeared in a new book on the president.
Michael Wolff, author of the book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” claims Bannon told him that a 2016 meeting between the president’s son and the Russians was “treasonous” and “unpatriotic.” In response, President Donald Trump asserted that Bannon lost his mind after he was fired from the White House last year.
Bannon has taken serious heat for his statements.
Michael Wolff is a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book. He used Sloppy Steve Bannon, who cried when he got fired and begged for his job. Now Sloppy Steve has been dumped like a dog by almost everyone. Too bad! https://t.co/mEeUhk5ZV9

“Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around,” Bannon said in a statement to Axios.
“My support is also unwavering for the president and his agenda,” he added. “I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president’s historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency.”
Bannon explained that his comments were not directed at the president’s son, but were instead aimed at Paul Manafort, who served as the campaign chairman for the president. Bannon called him a “seasoned campaign professional with experience and knowledge of how the Russians operate,” asserting that “he should have known they are duplicitous, cunning and not our friends.”
“To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr.,” he told reporters.
Bannon, having been the victim of a scorched-earth attack by the president in recent days, praised the president, arguing that Trump was the “only candidate that could have taken on and defeated the Clinton apparatus.”
He added that he remains “ready to stand in the breech for this president’s efforts to make America great again.”
