An elderly man died at a Swedish metro station Sunday after picking up what some suspect was a hand grenade.

A 60-year-old man suffered severe injuries outside the Varby Gard metro station in Stockholm, Sweden, after an object he picked up off the floor suddenly exploded. He was rushed to the hospital, but medical personnel were unable to save him. His partner, a 45-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital with lesser wounds to her face and legs.

“The man was seriously hurt injured after he picked up something from the ground and this device exploded,” Sven-Erik Olsson, a spokesman for Stockholm police, said, according to the Independent. While some Swedish reports claimed the object was a hand grenade, the police said such reports are speculative, arguing it is too early in the investigation to comment.

“Someone has used explosives. We do not know more than that,” Stockholm fire department spokesman Lars-Ake Stevelind told Sveriges Radio, according to Express. Speculation that the object was a hand grenade may be linked to the noticeable rise in hand grenade attacks and incidents in recent years.

Authorities do not believe the explosion was terror-related. The police initially investigated the explosion as an attempted murder, but they found nothing to indicate that the elderly couple was intentionally targeted.

The metro station and the surrounding areas were cordoned off, and bomb squads were sent into conduct extensive security checks.
