Kaepernick’s Old Teammate Says It’s ‘Fine’ If He Is Loses Job Over National Anthem Protests

San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid said he doesn’t care if NFL teams don’t sign him over his protests of the national anthem, according to a Friday interview.

Reid played with former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who made a name for himself by kneeling during the national anthem. Reid, who is now a free-agent, told ESPN he is not concerned about getting hired, and understands that his personal beliefs could cost him his job.

“I wouldn’t use the word concerned,” Reid said. “I would say I understand that’s a possibility. And I’m completely fine with it. The things that I’ve done, I stand by, and I’ve done that for my own personal beliefs. Like I said, I’m fine with whatever outcome happens because of that.”

When asked if he thinks teams will ignore him due to his protesting of the anthem, Reid said it is possible.

“It’s a possibility,” Reid said. “There are probably teams that won’t want to talk to me because of it. I’m hopeful that I will be on a team next year, but if not, again, that’s OK with me.”

Reid has continued to remain vocal about the issue, and even called out President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in an interview with “The View” in October over their concern with players protests during the national anthem, claiming that it’s not about the “anthem, the flag or the military.”

“It’s disheartening that the president of a country would call any of his citizens an S.O.B.,” the 49ers player said during his appearance. Reid’s comments come as he was asked about Pence leaving an NFL game due to protests of the national anthem.

“The vice president went to that game knowing ahead of time that the San Francisco 49ers had the most players engage in the protest, so he went to that game knowing that we’re going to protest again and he went to that game knowing that he would leave after the anthem so he could miss construe our message furthermore and say it’s being disrespectful,” he added.

It is unclear what Reid’s future in the NFL will look like.
