President Donald Trump blasted West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin in an interview with The New York Times Thursday night.
Trump criticized Manchin and other Democrats for refusing to work with Republicans on issues like health care or taxes. The president said Manchin is all talk but no action, and mentioned that the Democratic senator has contacted him multiple times expressing interest in working together on bipartisan issues, but said Manchin has never followed through.
“Like Joe Manchin,” Trump said in the interview. “He talks. But he doesn’t do anything. He doesn’t do,” Trump said. “‘Hey, let’s get together, let’s do bipartisan.’ I say, ‘Good, let’s go.’ Then you don’t hear from him again.”
Trump’s comments come as Republicans got their first major legislative win since he took office by passing the the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act Dec. 20. Trump signed the GOP tax reform bill into law two days later.
Manchin is up for re-election in 2018, but said in August that he doesn’t care about being reelected.
“I don’t give a shit, you understand? I just don’t give a shit,” he said in an interview with Charleston Gazette Mail. “Don’t care if I get elected, don’t care if I get defeated, how about that. If they think because I’m up for election, that I can be wrangled into voting for sh*t that I don’t like and can’t explain, they’re all crazy.”
Manchin is seeking re-election in a state that Trump won by a massive margin.
