Doug Jones: I May Break With Democrats On Certain Issues

Democratic Senator-elect Doug Jones of Alabama told CNN’s Jake Tapper Sunday that he may vote with Senate Republicans on certain issues.
Though Jones narrowly prevailed over firebrand Roy Moore in an early December special election, Alabama is a reliably Republican state that broke for President Donald Trump by 30 points in the 2016 presidential election. Should Jones hope to win reelection in 2020, he may need to break with Democrats and flash an independent streak.
Shortly after his victory, GOP Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, chairman of the National Republican Senate Committee, urged Jones to reflect Alabama’s values by supporting conservative causes.
“I’m going to talk to people on both sides of the aisle and try to figure out what I think is in the best interest of my state and the country,” he told Tapper.
